Šibenik

Šibenik is a historic town in Croatia. It is located almost in the central part of the Croatian Adriatic coast, in central Dalmatia, on the place where the river Krka, the one of the most beautiful karstic rivers in Croatia, flows into the Adriatic Sea. Šibenik is a political, educational, transport, industrial and tourist center of Šibenik-Knin county.

Šibenik was mentioned for the first time under its present name in 1066 in a Charter of the Croatian King Petar Krešimir IV. The central church in Šibenik, the Cathedral of St. James, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Several successive architects built it completely in stone in the 15th and 16th centuries, both in Gothic and in Renaissance style.

Insular part of the Šibenik - Knin County consists of 242 islands, islets and reefs. This archipelago is located mostly in the northwestern part of the Šibenik archipelago. Just ten of this islands are populated. The largest group of islands is called Kornati, which is also one of Croatia's eight National Parks. They are known for their strange shapes and splendor of natural beauty.

A couple of kilometers north of the Šibenik is the beautiful Krka National Park similar to the more famous Plitvice Lakes National Park. The park is full of breathtaking scenery of waterfalls, flora, fauna as well as historical and archaeological remains.
