Motovun
Motovun is ancient little town surrounded with a medieval wall on the top of a steep hill 277m above sea level, overlooking Mirna Valley. It is the best preserved medieval fortress on the Istrian peninsula. Name Motovun is of Celtic origin, and originates from the word Montona, which means the town on the hill.
In the town's main square, next to the Church of St. Stjepan, (which dates from the 17th century) there rises a romano-gothic tower bell from 13th century. The other side of the square features a Romanic palace, the biggest secular building in Istria, from that period.
Vineyards spread out around Motovun from which the famous local Malvasia and Teran wines are made. This is another good reason to visit this beautiful little town. It is only 65 kilometres from Pula airport, and through Expedia or Fly.com you can find flights throughout the year. Motovun is charming and welcoming all year round, especially for lovers of history, wine, film and nature.
The Motovun forest, which covers kilometres of the Mirna valley, is the largest habitat of Istrian truffles - the valuable underground mushrooms. Istrian white truffle to whom aphrodisiac properties are attributed is also called the "Diamond of the Kitchen".
The most eminent historical personalities of Motovun are: Andrea Antico, the composer and publisher of music history. Joseff Ressel, who in 1827 first tested his invention - the steam driven ship propeller. In recent history, Mario Andretti distinguished himself as world Formula One champion in 1978 and winner of the ' Indianapolis 500 miles'; he was born in Motovun in 1940.
Motovun and the Motovun Forest inspired the famous Croatian author, Vladimir Nazor, to write his allegorical novel, 'Veli Jože' (Big John).
The most significant event in Motovun is well known popular Motovun Film Festival. The festival is established in 1999. and since then it become one of the most popular places to be for five days in late July every year. The festival promotes independent films and it is estimated that festival is visited by 50000 people. Films are shown outdoors with large screen placed at Motovun's main square.
